The good news is that there are tricks and movements that beginners can perform fairly easily with a little practice, and once you know them, more complex and complicated movements will be easier to perform. In this article we give some simple and very exciting tips for beginners in longboarding.
Today we will guide you through some basic tips that will make work easier and more exciting for beginners. That doesn’t cover all the tricks. There are other amazing tricks like cutting on a longboard (very popular), how to stop on a longboard (often with beginners) and so on. To start with, we looked at the most important movements, which are quite simple and ideal if you’re new to the sport. Once you’ve mastered these tricks, you’ll be more inclined to try harder.
Balance of one leg
The longboard is a balance. You need balance to get on the board, to drive and also when you stop. Balancing on both legs does not require much, but if you learn to brake, you should try to balance on one leg.
How to do:
- Place the front leg (less dominant) in front of the screws and hold a small forward thrust. Remember that you will only use this foot to balance yourself on the board and to move forward.
- The back leg that you normally push should be in the air, out of the board and a little parallel to the front leg. Don’t place it too far from the steering leg.
- Now try to get on the board and try to cover a greater distance each time you try.
- You may be tempted to find your dominant leg on the board to achieve balance, but remember that this exercise is designed to help you achieve better balance when driving with just one leg.
- You can try to switch from one leg to the other to balance on one of the legs if necessary.
- Don’t forget to lean forward a little with your upper body so that the board doesn’t slip away from you.
This is another step where you learn how to brake easily and safely. Practice makes the transition to braking much easier.
How to do:
- Place your forefoot correctly on the board and apply slight pressure in a crouching position on one leg.
- Bend the other leg at knee level, it should be airborne and slightly elevated.
- Try to put your hands forward and keep them away.
- Now put as many squats on the front leg as possible, increasing both the number of squats and the distance covered.
- Once you have learned how to do this correctly, pull your rear leg forward and repeat the action.
- Practice with both legs, move from one side to the other.
Braking with the leg
There are many ways to brake, but foot brakes are one of the safest for a novice driver. It is also easy to learn after practicing balancing and crouching on one leg.
How to do:
- Follow the steps for balancing on one foot and bring yourself fully into balance on the lead foot by pushing forward.
- In the next bend the front leg is slightly bent and both knees are also bent to bring the rear leg closer to the ground.
- Gradually touch the ground with your back leg, bent knee and, in the correct position, the front of the sock foot. You can place the back leg parallel to or slightly in front of the front leg.
- Slowly move your weight from the training foot to the brake foot.
- Do not place the brake foot behind the rider, as the board may slide forward, disturbing the balance and causing the legs to burst.
- Lift your toes slightly and press the heel of the brake foot to avoid tripping when stopping.
It’s a very simple trick that will teach you how to do 180 laps with your board.
How to do:
- Bend your knees a little before turning your body 180° in the opposite direction.
- As soon as you bend your knees, exert maximum pressure on your foreleg and make a 180° bend, taking your plate with you.
- If you turn the board, you will notice that it rises slightly from the back as you reduce the pressure on the push leg and shift the weight to the front leg.
- When landing, bend your knees a little to end the journey safely.
Ghost Ride is a little trick, but it’s a lot of fun.
How to do:
- Just stand in a normal driving position and be balanced on the front leg.
- In a very fast movement you have to put your hind leg over the front leg and put it on the ground.
- As soon as your rear leg hits the ground, take your front leg off the board, go around your rear leg and get back on the board.
- You can do this several times during the trip.
180 None, meets
It’s one of the most popular tricks, and if you learn to do it while you’re still new to longboarding, you’ll gain confidence and better control over the board.
How to do:
- Stand with your forefoot on your heels and lean forward a little.
- To prevent your sign from appearing suddenly, gradually push your front leg to keep the light on the sign until you are ready to make a turn.
- Slide your forefoot off the board while turning your body by placing your forefoot on the ground.
- Press your tail, but keep your rear foot on the board and check the rotation of the board.
- As soon as the sign turns in the air, take your foot off the ground and jump on the board again.
- The trick makes it possible to change the position between the front leg and the back leg, but the board rotates 180 degrees between the two.
